According to the Sydney Morning Herald the Inner West Council will roll out bins for kitchen scraps and food waste to all Inner West households by October, achieving full coverage of Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) collection across the local government area. The Council is aiming for a 40% reduction in waste going to landfill, higher than the 26% reduction experienced by Randwick City Council since it introduced LGA-wide FOGO collection in March 2021.
The Inner West Council estimates that 9% of local residential greenhouse gas emissions can be attributed to landfill, primarily driven by decomposing organic matter. Diverting organic waste from landfill, to be processed in more environmentally friendly ways, is therefore an important step on the path to zero local emissions.
